Love, laughter and life’s adventures: Gary and Kerry

Love, laughter and life’s adventures: Gary and Kerry

This Valentine’s Day, we’re celebrating a love story that’s been quietly growing stronger for more than five decades.

For Gary and Kerry Tate, love has always been about togetherness.

Married for an incredible 53 years, the couple first met thanks to a blind date organised by Gary’s best mate and brother, Chris. What began as a simple introduction soon became a lifelong partnership, one filled with shared adventures, everyday joy and unwavering support.

To mark their most recent anniversary, Gary and Kerry celebrated with a return cruise from Sydney to Hobart, followed by a train journey to Canberra. The standout experience was two unforgettable nights at Jamala Wildlife Park, spending one night beside curious meerkats and another next to playful lemurs, separated only by glass.

“The guided tours, animals, behind-the-scenes feeding and our meals were extraordinary,” Gary says.

Travel has long been part of their love language. One especially memorable journey took them to Japan during cherry blossom season, a magical mix of planes, bullet trains, ferries and automobiles, all set against stunning blooms, warm hospitality and oishii food.

Closer to home, their Valentine’s moments are often found in the simple things. A nearby pétanque court has become a favourite outing, where Kerry usually claims victory and the winner’s kiss. “I am NOT a sore loser!” Gary laughs.

Like many couples, the past two years have brought challenges. Health issues tested their strength and resilience but also deepened their appreciation for one another and the power of facing life’s tougher moments side by side.

The WA Seniors Card has been part of their journey for nearly 15 years, helping them continue exploring together. From travelling around Perth for free on public transport to discovering new places, visiting friends or enjoying riverside rides and lunch stops, the card supports the lifestyle they love.

When asked what has sustained their marriage for more than half a century, Gary doesn’t hesitate. “Empathy is the key to long-lasting love.”

And love, to Gary and Kerry, means one simple thing.

“Togetherness.”

This Valentine’s Day, their story is a beautiful reminder that lasting love isn’t just about grand gestures. It’s about choosing each other every day, through life’s adventures and challenges alike.
